Aave Proposes Native Bitcoin Collateral, Awaits Approval

Babylon Labs is advancing a proposal to let users borrow stablecoins on Aave V4 using native Bitcoin (BTC) locked in Taproot vaults, without converting it to wrapped BTC or transferring it to a central custodian. Aave would track the collateral through restricted accounting units in a dedicated lending market, designed to isolate risk. The proposal has passed an initial community temperature check and is now under review, but it is not approved or live. Risk analysis, a Snapshot vote and on-chain governance approval remain outstanding. The plan also includes emergency controls that could pause withdrawals, repayments and liquidations but cannot move or release BTC, alongside interim multisig and guardian groups. Forum participants have raised questions about pause procedures and control of vault infrastructure. Revenue sharing could include AAVE and BABY purchases at higher revenue tiers. If approved, the integration could expand Bitcoin-backed borrowing, but demand, security risks and market effects remain uncertain.
Neutral
The proposal is not yet approved or live, so it does not immediately change BTC’s circulating supply, liquidity or access to the market. In the short term, the governance process and unresolved questions about vault security and emergency controls are likely to limit any direct price response; traders may treat the news as a development to monitor rather than a near-term catalyst. If approved, native Bitcoin collateral could add a new borrowing use case and potentially increase demand for BTC over the longer term. However, that effect depends on adoption, borrowing demand and the security of the vault and liquidation design. The proposal alone therefore does not provide a clear directional signal for BTC, and broader market conditions are likely to remain more influential.
