AI Agents Drive 138 Million x402 Crypto Payments on Base

AI agents made more than 138 million payments through Coinbase’s x402 protocol on the Base network by the third quarter of 2026, up from about 1,500 in mid-2025, according to Chainalysis. Agents are using crypto to pay for computing power, web data, AI model access and coding tools. In July, x402 processed about 75 million payments worth $24 million over 30 days. More than 87% of analyzed payments were worth 10 cents or less, while the time between wallet funding and an agent’s first payment fell from 73 days in late 2025 to 18 minutes in the third quarter of 2026. These figures point to growing use of x402 crypto payments and stablecoins for automated micropayments. Among identifiable transactions, US-linked wallets accounted for 88.1% of AI model inference payments; China-linked wallets led spending on security and code-analysis services, much of it directed to smart-contract auditor AgentLisa. Coinbase, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe and Google are supporting payment infrastructure for AI agents. However, the data covers identifiable activity on x402, not the wider market, and TRM has cautioned that some apparent agent transactions may be scripts or self-dealing. The growth in x402 crypto payments signals a possible new blockchain use case, but transaction counts alone do not establish lasting commercial demand.
Neutral
The news is neutral for the price of Base-related assets: Base has no native token, and the article identifies no direct price catalyst for a traded cryptocurrency. In the short term, the transaction figures could attract attention to Base’s ecosystem and support sentiment around on-chain payments, but reported activity does not by itself imply increased token demand or buying pressure. The very small payment sizes and questions about scripts or self-dealing may also temper trader enthusiasm. Longer term, wider adoption of x402 and stablecoin micropayments could strengthen the case for blockchain-based commerce and benefit the broader ecosystem if genuine economic activity follows. However, the data covers only identifiable x402 transactions, and its implications for any specific token remain indirect. As a result, a clear bullish or bearish price impact is not established.
