Analyst Sees Stronger Altcoin Cycle Ahead in 2026
Crypto analyst Dennis Liu, known as VirtualBacon, says he is more bullish on altcoins than at any point in four years. He points to the Federal Reserve’s expanding balance sheet since November 2025, arguing that renewed liquidity could support altcoins relative to Bitcoin (BTC). He also says the altcoin-to-Bitcoin ratio is near historical lows and that a recent pullback may offer a better entry point.
Liu does not expect a repeat of the 2020–2021 boom. He assigns a 50% chance to altcoins moving sideways against BTC, a 40% chance of outperformance and a 10% chance of further underperformance. Analyst Matthew Hyland says the median altcoin is ahead of BTC year to date in 2026, the first such occurrence since 2021.
Recent price action remains weak: BTC was rejected below $85,000 and the crypto market lost more than $60 billion from its previous daily peak. BTC was around $82,000, with dominance above 58%; Ethereum (ETH) was near $2,400, down 2% over seven days, while Monero (XMR) gained 8% to about $613. The outlook for altcoins is therefore based on liquidity and relative valuations, while short-term market momentum remains uncertain.
Bullish
The article is modestly bullish for altcoins because it highlights potential tailwinds rather than a confirmed change in market direction. Liu argues that a growing Federal Reserve balance sheet could improve liquidity, a condition that coincided with altcoin outperformance in 2020–2021. He also cites a low altcoin-to-Bitcoin ratio and a possible recovery in the median altcoin’s relative performance. Such signals may encourage traders to rotate some exposure from BTC into higher-risk tokens.
The evidence is not conclusive. Liu’s own probabilities give altcoins only a 40% chance of outperforming BTC, while sideways performance is the most likely outcome at 50%. Recent data also show BTC dominance above 58%, a rejection below $85,000 and a sharp decline in total crypto market value. These factors suggest that traders may remain cautious and that any altcoin rally could be uneven and sensitive to BTC’s price action.
In the short term, the commentary could lift sentiment and attract speculative buying, particularly in liquid altcoins, but it is not a direct catalyst such as a policy announcement or a confirmed shift in capital flows. If liquidity continues to expand and BTC stabilises, the historical parallel with earlier periods of altcoin strength may support a broader rotation over the longer term. If the Fed balance sheet trend reverses, or BTC falls and dominance rises further, altcoins could continue to lag. The outlook is therefore bullish in direction, but conditional and high-risk.
