Ripple, Arf Use RLUSD for Cross-Border Finance

Ripple and Swiss payments firm Arf are partnering to provide RLUSD-powered settlement financing for licensed cross-border payment companies on the XRP Ledger (XRPL). Arf handles about $10 billion in annual settlement volume, and the short-term working capital is typically repaid within one to five days as transfers settle and funds are reused. Arf will initially make lending and borrower-assessment decisions. XRP is needed for XRPL network fees and applicable account reserves, but payment firms are not required to buy XRP. The partnership could increase RLUSD use in institutional payments, although the companies have not disclosed a funding allocation or expected transaction volume. A longer-term move to onchain lending depends on validator approval of XRPL proposals XLS-65 and XLS-66; a reported snapshot showed 19 validators in support, short of the 29 then required. As a result, the potential for more XRPL lending activity—and any effect on XRP demand—remains uncertain.
Neutral
The announcement is more directly positive for RLUSD’s potential utility than for XRP’s price. XRP is used for XRPL fees and applicable reserves, but the arrangement does not require payment firms to purchase XRP, and no funding allocation or expected transaction volume has been disclosed. This limits the basis for estimating immediate, material buying demand for XRP. In the short term, traders may respond to the institutional payments use case, but the lack of quantified flows and the fact that the initial financing is managed by Arf make a sustained price effect uncertain. Over the longer term, approval of XLS-65 and XLS-66 could enable more lending activity on XRPL and potentially support ecosystem interest. However, validator support was below the stated threshold in the reported snapshot, and any eventual increase in platform activity would not automatically translate into significant XRP demand. Overall, the announcement offers a possible ecosystem catalyst, but insufficient evidence of direct XRP buying pressure makes a neutral price assessment most appropriate.
