Banca Sella Secures MiCA Approval for Crypto Custody in 2026

Banca Sella says it has completed its notification process with the Bank of Italy, clearing the way to launch regulated crypto services in 2026. The bank will offer MiCA-compliant crypto custody and transfer services, starting with selected customer groups rather than a broad rollout. Managing Director of Digital Banking Andrea Tessera linked the move to the shift toward faster, interoperable and “programmable” payments and financial infrastructure. Banca Sella also points to prior work: since 2022 it has participated in Bank of Italy fintech trials via Fintech Milano Hub and invested in blockchain/distributed ledger capabilities. The approval also reinforces its stablecoin push. Banca Sella is a founding member of Qivalis, a consortium of 37 banks across 15 countries developing euro-backed stablecoin infrastructure. For crypto traders, this is a gradual, infrastructure-led development. It supports the build-out of MiCA-era rails for crypto custody and transfers, and could strengthen euro stablecoin settlement over time, but the limited initial customer scope suggests no immediate liquidity shock.
Neutral
Neutral. The news is supportive for Europe’s regulated infrastructure story (MiCA-compliant crypto custody and transfers), but it is not an exchange listing or a new retail on/off-ramp. The rollout is limited to selected customer groups and targets custody/transfer workflows first, which reduces the chance of an immediate, market-wide liquidity impact on any single token. In the short term, traders may see mostly narrative-level sentiment rather than a direct price catalyst. Over the longer term, expanding bank-grade rails could improve institutional access to compliant settlement, including euro stablecoin-related settlement, which is constructive for ecosystem growth but still likely gradual given the phased launch and unclear token issuance exposure.
