Bhutan Debuts National Crypto Payments for Tourists

Bhutan has rolled out the world’s first national crypto payments system tailored to tourists. Launched on May 7, 2025, the platform integrates Binance Pay and DK Bank to accept over 100 cryptocurrencies. Visitors can pay for airfare, visas, lodging and local goods via QR code using Bitcoin, Binance Coin, USD Coin and other digital assets. DK Bank converts payments into ngultrum or USD, shielding merchants from volatility and cutting commission fees. Over 1,000 sellers, including rural craftsmen, now accept crypto. The move aligns with Bhutan’s high-value, low-volume tourism strategy. Beyond travel, the country holds more than 12,000 BTC, has sponsored Bitcoin mining since 2019, and adds digital assets to national reserves. Connectivity challenges persist in remote areas, but Bhutan’s leadership sees crypto payments as key to modernizing its economy and boosting financial inclusion.
Bullish
Bhutan’s adoption of a national crypto payments system enhances real-world use cases for Bitcoin, Binance Coin and USD Coin, mirroring bullish responses seen when El Salvador granted Bitcoin legal tender. By reducing fees and volatility risk, this initiative lowers barriers for merchant adoption. Integration with Binance Pay opens access to over 40 million users, expanding the addressable market for crypto payments and boosting network effects. While connectivity issues remain a short-term constraint, long-term benefits include increased on-chain transaction volume, higher demand for major tokens, and stronger institutional interest in crypto infrastructure. Traders can expect positive sentiment around BTC, BNB and stablecoins as adoption milestones drive both price discovery and ecosystem development.
