Binance Hack: $6.34B Reserve, Withdrawals Paused
Binance says it has set aside more than $6.34 billion to cover an estimated $6.3 billion loss from a record security breach. It says $5 billion is already held in the affected assets, including BTC, ETH, BNB, USDC and USDT, and it is acquiring the remaining tokens. Binance says users will not bear the loss. The exchange has not disclosed when it acquired the assets and plans to detail its holdings in a Proof of Reserves report scheduled for Nov. 2.
Withdrawals remain suspended during security checks, with Binance targeting a phased reopening in about 34 hours, subject to the results. Deposits and unaffected services remain operational. Binance says it has contained compromised infrastructure and revoked affected authorizations, though investigators have found additional breach points; it has not found evidence that wallet private keys were leaked.
Binance is also working with law enforcement and industry partners to recover about $3 billion in assets frozen on-chain. TRM Labs attributed the attack to North Korean hacking group TraderTraitor and said wallets across 10 blockchains were drained. The Binance hack and withdrawal pause could weigh on confidence and BNB in the short term. The pledged reserve, frozen funds and recovery plan may help contain broader concerns, but traders will watch for the resumption of withdrawals and the Proof of Reserves disclosure.
Bearish
The breach and suspension of withdrawals create short-term downside risks for BNB, as traders may respond to exchange-security concerns by reducing exposure or moving assets elsewhere. A prolonged pause, further evidence of compromised infrastructure, or delays in recovery could deepen that pressure. The pledged $6.34 billion reserve, Binance’s statement that users will not bear the loss, and the recovery of roughly $3 billion in frozen assets may limit panic and support confidence if verified. Over the longer term, BNB’s direction will depend on the transparency of the Proof of Reserves report, the safe resumption of withdrawals and whether Binance demonstrates that its security controls have been strengthened. The overall classification is bearish because immediate uncertainty and disruption outweigh the reassurance from the reserve commitment.
