Binance Sets Aside $6.34B as Bitcoin and BNB Fall
Binance says it has reserved more than $6.34 billion in company funds to compensate users affected by a major theft. About $5 billion is already held in the affected assets, with the remainder being purchased through market and over-the-counter trades. Withdrawals remain suspended, while deposits are open; roughly $3 billion in frozen assets is being pursued separately. The Binance compensation process and ongoing root-cause investigation remain key sources of uncertainty for crypto traders.
The market was under pressure at the report time: BTC was down 3.39% and BNB 5.69%. US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded about $441 million in net inflows over four trading days, but inflows slowed to $17.07 million on 29 October. Ether ETFs saw about $276 million in net outflows over the same period.
LSK led the day’s gainers, but its token buyback is ongoing and the Lisk Chain is scheduled to close on 31 October. Traders still holding LSK on that chain face a narrow migration window. Elsewhere, TRX open interest rose 59.09% over 24 hours, while XMR open interest increased 42.22% as its price fell 2.03%. Hyperliquid weekly revenue rose 6.3%, and Aave proposed temporary interest-rate changes to ease pressure on borrowers in frozen reserves.
Bearish
The near-term setup is bearish, though the impact is not uniformly negative. BTC and BNB were already down 3.39% and 5.69%, while spot Ether ETFs continued to see substantial outflows. Slowing Bitcoin ETF inflows also suggest that institutional demand was not strong enough to offset selling pressure. Binance’s $6.34 billion compensation reserve is a significant buffer, but suspended withdrawals, ongoing asset purchases and an unresolved investigation can keep traders cautious and volatility elevated.
Past exchange failures and security incidents have often triggered sharp, short-lived risk-off moves, particularly when users fear delayed access to funds. In this case, the scale of the announced reserve and the separately frozen assets may help limit further confidence damage if compensation is delivered transparently and promptly. Conversely, delays or evidence of a larger loss could renew selling pressure across exchange-linked assets and the wider market.
In the short term, traders may focus on Binance service updates, BTC ETF flows and whether BTC can stabilize after the sell-off. BNB may remain especially sensitive to developments involving Binance. The Lisk Chain closure creates additional event risk for LSK holders who still need to migrate assets. Over the longer term, successful compensation and stronger security controls could restore confidence; continued uncertainty could increase demand for self-custody and deepen scrutiny of centralized exchanges. Overall, the headline risk and weak price and ETF-flow signals support a bearish classification, but the reserve announcement provides a meaningful mitigating factor.
