Binance Attacker’s MetaMask Gas Use May Leave a Trace
A suspected Binance attacker may have left a trace by using MetaMask’s Gas Station, protocol engineer Justin Kalland says. A newly funded wallet received 175 million USDT, then 2 ETH for transaction fees. Two minutes later, it used MetaMask’s Gas Station despite already having enough ETH for gas.
Three transactions were included in the same block: an ETH top-up, an unlimited USDT approval for the Kyber Network router, and a 127.67 USDT payment to the Gas Station. The ETH amount exactly matched the maximum gas budgets for the other two transactions, down to the wei.
Kalland suspects the attacker was using MetaMask and may have selected USDT for gas by mistake. Using the service requires MetaMask Sentinel, which could leave off-chain records, potentially including IP metadata. Among the attacker wallets he examined, this was the only one that appeared to use the Gas Station. The finding may provide investigators with a lead, but it does not establish the attacker’s identity.
Bearish
The report concerns a suspected Binance wallet compromise and a possible clue for investigators, rather than a confirmed recovery or a new security fix. As a result, the immediate market effect is likely to be mildly bearish: traders may remain cautious about exchange wallet security, reduce exposure to affected assets, or watch for further outflows and official updates. The article does not establish that user funds are at risk or that the attacker has been identified.
Past exchange hacks and security incidents have often triggered short-term volatility, elevated withdrawals, and downward pressure on the exchange’s associated token or assets linked to the incident. The scale and duration of such moves have generally depended on confirmed losses, the exchange’s response, and whether withdrawals or trading are disrupted. Here, the possible MetaMask record may support tracing efforts, but it does not itself reverse the theft or guarantee asset recovery.
In the short term, traders should monitor Binance statements, wallet movements, withdrawal status, and broader market sentiment. In the longer term, the incident may renew attention to wallet controls, transaction-signing systems, and on-chain traceability. Without confirmation of wider contagion or service disruption, the news alone is unlikely to determine the direction of the overall crypto market.
