Binance Incident Drives $590M in Bitcoin Put Hedging

After a security incident at Binance, large traders increased hedges against a short-term Bitcoin decline. Early reports described losses exceeding $6 billion, but Binance later put the estimated impact at about $63 million and said it would cover the losses with its SAFU fund and company funds. Paradigm recorded about $590 million in Bitcoin options block trades during the eight hours after the incident became public, with most activity in puts. The earlier report also noted that the first large trade came roughly 15 minutes after funds reportedly began leaving a Binance wallet, before public disclosure. Trades included puts with strikes around $74,000 to $78,000, expiring that week and in mid-November. Paradigm said the flow suggested protection against a near-term pullback rather than bets on a market crash. Deribit also saw sizeable put strategies, including one reported at about $190 million. One-week options skew briefly rose to around 18%, signalling stronger demand for downside protection, before easing; it remained positive across maturities. Some traders also bought calls, including March contracts, so sentiment was not uniformly bearish. The Bitcoin options flow points to caution, and traders may monitor put prices and skew for signs that concerns about the incident or broader market weakness are growing.
Bearish
The immediate price signal for Bitcoin is mildly bearish. Heavy put buying near spot and a rise in one-week options skew indicate that traders paid more for downside protection and were guarding against further short-term losses. That hedging can reflect expectations of volatility rather than a firm prediction of a crash, and the reported put activity does not establish that traders were net short Bitcoin. The signal is also mixed: some traders bought calls, and Binance said it would cover the estimated $63 million impact with its own resources and SAFU fund. Those factors may limit concern about direct forced selling or lasting damage to confidence. In the short term, however, continued put demand or rising skew could accompany pressure on Bitcoin if broader market weakness persists. Over the longer term, the incident alone is not enough to establish a sustained bearish trend; Bitcoin’s direction will depend more on follow-through in spot demand, volatility and derivatives positioning.
