Bitcoin at $80K as Retail Deposits Rise and Whales Pull Back
Bitcoin is trading near $80,450 as it struggles to hold the $80,000 level ahead of the Federal Reserve’s Wednesday decision. CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost says small-holder Bitcoin deposits to Binance have reached a six-month high, near $11 billion over 30 days. Whale deposits, by contrast, have fallen from about $6 billion in late August to roughly $4 billion.
The opposing flows suggest smaller holders may be more inclined to sell or trade the dip, while large holders are not rushing to move coins to exchanges. Bitcoin derivatives remain tilted toward longs: funding rates are positive despite about $820 million in crypto liquidations, mostly long positions, during Saturday’s drop to $79,221. A reported $1.29 billion short position held by Abraxas Capital on Hyperliquid was described as a hedge against spot holdings, not necessarily a bearish bet.
Key levels are $79,221–$79,369 for support, with a break potentially exposing the 200-day EMA near $76,350. Bitcoin first needs to reclaim its 50-day EMA at $80,812; resistance then sits around $81,430–$81,850 and $82,850. CryptoQuant analyst TraderGemini said the rising trader realized price could act as on-chain support during a correction. Bitcoin’s next move may depend on whether buyers defend support and how markets react to the Fed decision.
Neutral
The on-chain and market signals are mixed, so the news does not establish a clear directional outlook. Rising small-holder deposits to Binance may increase near-term sell pressure, especially if BTC breaks the $79,221–$79,369 support zone. Positive funding rates also show that derivatives traders remain positioned for gains; if support fails, crowded longs could be liquidated and amplify a decline. A sustained move below support would put the 200-day EMA near $76,350 in focus.
There are countervailing signs. Whale deposits have declined from about $6 billion to $4 billion, suggesting large holders are not increasing exchange transfers to sell. The rising trader realized price may also provide on-chain support, while reclaiming the 50-day EMA at $80,812 could improve short-term sentiment. Resistance around $81,430–$81,850 and $82,850 remains a hurdle.
Historically, exchange inflows can signal potential selling, but they may also reflect trading or collateral movements; they are not proof that coins will be sold. Likewise, positive funding can support a rebound but leaves the market vulnerable to a long squeeze. In the short term, BTC is likely to remain sensitive to support tests, positioning, and the Federal Reserve decision. Longer term, the divergence between retail and whale flows is a signal to monitor rather than a decisive trend change. The overall assessment is neutral, with volatility risk elevated.
