Bitcoin Dormancy Data Signals Early Bull-Market Conditions

Bitcoin on-chain data suggests that long-term holders are becoming less active, a pattern CryptoQuant says has preceded strong rallies. The share of Bitcoin’s realized cap held by coins dormant for at least 18 months eased from 26.98% on Sept. 16 to 26.59%, a modest decline the analytics firm views as an early-cycle signal rather than confirmation of a rally. Coins unmoved for five years or more averaged about 34,000 BTC in monthly on-chain volume in 2026, roughly half the 2024 level. CryptoQuant says reduced spending may indicate that long-term investors are holding their Bitcoin rather than selling. Meanwhile, the 18-month-to-two-year holder group is the only long-term cohort currently in aggregate loss, with a cost basis of $93,193. Galaxy Digital described Bitcoin’s maximum drawdown from its $126,200 all-time high as 53%, the shallowest on record. The data points to reduced selling pressure and potentially supportive conditions for Bitcoin, but the change in holder activity remains limited and does not guarantee further price gains.
Bullish
The signals in the report lean bullish for Bitcoin, but they are not conclusive. CryptoQuant says a decline in the realized-cap share held by coins dormant for 18 months or more has historically appeared before strong rallies. The easing of five-year-plus coin spending to about 34,000 BTC per month, half the 2024 rate, may also indicate reduced distribution by long-term holders and less available sell-side supply. In the short term, traders may treat these figures as supportive on-chain context, particularly if they coincide with stronger spot demand, ETF inflows, rising trading volume and a break above key resistance. However, the change in the 18-month cohort is small, and on-chain dormancy alone does not establish that buyers are returning. Macro conditions, derivatives positioning and profit-taking could still drive volatility or a price decline. For the longer term, lower spending by older holders may help limit supply pressure if demand remains steady. Similar historical shifts in holder behavior have accompanied prior Bitcoin bull-market phases, but they are not reliable timing signals and can be followed by further distribution. The reported 53% maximum drawdown from the $126,200 high and the fact that most older cohorts remain in profit also provide context, not proof that a new uptrend is established. Traders should view the evidence as a moderately positive market signal, not a standalone buy trigger.
