Bitcoin ETFs Bought 79,800 BTC as Treasury Demand Slowed

US spot Bitcoin ETFs bought 79,800 BTC worth about $6.2 billion in Q3 2026, reversing $4.8 billion in net outflows in Q2. ETF purchases were nearly twice the 41,300 BTC mined during the quarter, but were concentrated in two short periods that accounted for 91% of inflows. Bitcoin rose 42.7% and ended September at $83,570. Public companies’ Bitcoin treasury purchases fell to about $1 billion from $7.1 billion in Q2. Strategy added 1,700 BTC, while reporting $349 million in sales during July and August. Combined ETF and public treasury purchases totalled about $7.2 billion, or 2.4 times the value of newly mined Bitcoin. That demand faced a substantial counterweight: long-term holders sold 248,000 BTC worth about $17.4 billion, more than three times the ETFs’ purchases. The figures show strong institutional demand through Bitcoin ETFs, but also significant holder selling and weaker corporate buying. Traders may watch for sustained ETF inflows and a slowdown in long-term holder sales to gauge whether demand can support Bitcoin prices.
Neutral
The figures present opposing forces for Bitcoin. Strong spot ETF purchases—nearly twice quarterly mined supply—may support prices by absorbing newly issued BTC, and the reversal from Q2 outflows signals renewed institutional demand. However, ETF inflows were heavily concentrated, corporate treasury buying slowed sharply, and long-term holders sold more than three times the amount bought by ETFs. This supply can limit the price effect of institutional demand and increase volatility if selling persists. In the short term, traders may react to ETF flow data and signs of continued holder distribution; over the longer term, sustained ETF buying alongside easing long-term holder sales would be more supportive. The mixed signals warrant a neutral assessment rather than a clear directional call.
