Bitcoin Holds High as Weak Jobs Data Cuts October Hike Odds
Bitcoin remains in a strong high-range consolidation within what analysts describe as an ongoing bull market. The view is supported by the market’s resilience despite negative news and its tendency to move sideways rather than undergo deeper corrections.
September US nonfarm payrolls increased by only 29,000, well below the 90,000 forecast, while the unemployment rate rose to 4.2%. Following the release, the implied probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike in October fell to 16%, reducing near-term monetary policy pressure on Bitcoin and other crypto assets.
Bitcoin initially rose on the weak jobs data but later gave back gains as US Treasury yields remained elevated. This has increased the possibility that either bonds or equities and crypto will need to correct. Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $100 million in net inflows on 1 October. BlackRock accounted for $195 million of purchases, while Fidelity and Grayscale recorded outflows, suggesting buying was concentrated among some institutions while other investors reduced exposure.
Traders are now watching the 14 October US Consumer Price Index report. A softer CPI reading could further reinforce expectations of no October rate hike and support Bitcoin’s high-level consolidation. However, elevated bond yields and mixed ETF flows remain key risks.
Bullish
The near-term market bias is bullish, but the signal is not unequivocal. A sharp miss in US payrolls and a rise in unemployment reduce expectations for an October Federal Reserve rate hike. Lower rate expectations generally support Bitcoin by easing pressure from higher real yields and improving the appeal of risk assets. The next CPI report could strengthen this effect if inflation continues to slow.
Bitcoin’s ability to hold near recent highs despite weak ETF breadth and elevated Treasury yields is also constructive. Similar reactions have occurred after dovish economic surprises, when traders initially buy crypto assets on lower-rate expectations. However, gains can fade when bond yields remain high, as seen after several past US data releases. The initial rise and subsequent retracement in this case shows that traders remain cautious.
In the short term, Bitcoin may continue consolidating at elevated levels, with CPI, Treasury yields and spot ETF flows likely to drive volatility. A softer CPI and renewed broad-based ETF inflows could trigger an upside breakout. Conversely, persistent yields, further ETF outflows or a hotter CPI reading could produce a deeper correction. Longer term, the combination of resilient price action and reduced tightening expectations is supportive, but confirmation will require sustained institutional demand rather than isolated purchases.
