Bitcoin Whales Turn Net Short on Hyperliquid

Bitcoin whales tracked by Glassnode on Hyperliquid turned net short last week, the first such shift since March. The change reverses earlier long positioning that Glassnode said had been established near Bitcoin’s market bottom. It may signal expectations of a deeper pullback, but it also leaves the traders exposed to losses if BTC rebounds and triggers a short squeeze. Bitcoin was trading near $80,000. Glassnode previously identified major leveraged liquidation clusters around $85,000 and $87,000, where forced short closures could accelerate a rally. It also noted a liquidation band near $79,600 below the market. These levels could intensify price moves in either direction, but they do not guarantee a breakout or further decline. Hyperliquid settles perpetual-futures funding hourly. When funding is positive, longs pay shorts; when it is negative, shorts pay longs. Funding reflects the gap between perpetual and spot prices, so the direction of whale positioning alone does not establish the cost or profitability of the trades. Overall, the shift is a bearish positioning signal, while liquidation levels leave room for a sharp short squeeze.
Bearish
The net-short shift is a bearish signal for Bitcoin trading sentiment: large Hyperliquid traders are positioned for downside after previously holding longs. In the short term, this may encourage other traders to reduce long exposure or add hedges, particularly with BTC near $80,000 and a liquidation band around $79,600. A break lower could trigger forced liquidations and increase volatility. However, Glassnode presents the positioning as a possibility, not a confirmed forecast. Its earlier data placed major liquidation clusters near $85,000 and $87,000, so a rebound could force shorts to cover and fuel a squeeze. Similar leveraged-market episodes have shown that crowded positions can amplify moves in either direction; whale positioning alone is not reliable proof of future price direction. Funding rates, spot demand, liquidity and broader market conditions will also matter. Over the longer term, this change is not by itself evidence of a trend reversal. Traders may treat it as a caution signal and monitor whether BTC holds support, whether spot buying returns, and whether liquidation levels are approached. The overall classification is bearish because of the direction of the whale positioning, but the potential for a short squeeze makes the signal conditional and raises the risk of sharp two-way price action.
