Bitget Launches Open Custody Network for Institutional Trading
Bitget has launched its Open Custody Network (OCN), allowing eligible institutions to trade on Bitget’s spot, margin and futures markets while keeping assets with independent banks and institutional custodians. Asset mirroring links externally held collateral to Bitget’s trading infrastructure without requiring transfers into exchange custody.
The network targets market makers, asset managers and other institutions seeking custody flexibility, reduced custody concentration risk and access to exchange liquidity. Bitget says the service builds on arrangements with Copper, Cactus Custody, Fireblocks, OSL and Sygnum Bank; available markets and settlement terms vary by provider. Adoption figures were not disclosed.
The launch follows Bitget’s September security breach, which the exchange said caused $387.5 million in losses, while customer balances remained unchanged and its protection fund would cover the losses. An October reserve disclosure reported a 115% overall reserve ratio across covered assets. OCN could broaden institutional access to Bitget, but its effect will depend on provider terms and uptake.
Neutral
The launch is strategically relevant to Bitget because it could make the exchange’s spot, margin and futures markets more accessible to institutions without requiring them to move assets into exchange custody. If adoption grows, increased institutional activity could support trading volumes and strengthen confidence in Bitget’s custody flexibility. However, the announcement provides no adoption figures, and markets and settlement terms vary by provider, so the scale of any benefit is uncertain.
The September breach and the disclosed loss of $387.5 million may remain a source of concern for traders, despite Bitget’s statements that customer balances were unchanged and its protection fund would cover the losses. The October reserve ratio of 115% offers additional context but does not by itself establish future demand for any Bitget-related asset. As the reports do not identify a specific cryptocurrency whose price is directly affected, the news is best assessed as neutral rather than a clear short-term bullish or bearish catalyst. Longer-term sentiment could improve if OCN gains institutional uptake and Bitget maintains confidence in its security and reserves.
