Bitmine Caps Ethereum Treasury at 5% of Supply

Bitmine Immersion Technologies plans to stop buying Ethereum after its treasury reaches 5% of ETH’s circulating supply. The Nasdaq-listed firm holds about 6 million ETH, or roughly 4.9%, and needs to acquire around 100,000 more to reach the cap. Chairman Tom Lee said the limit followed discussions with Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Ethereum Foundation researchers over concerns about network centralization. Lee said the cap would let Bitmine benefit from any price gains while limiting further shareholder dilution. The firm currently earns about $1 million a day from staking through its Maven operation. Lee also described the market as being in a new bull cycle and cited institutional tokenization, treasury accumulation and blockchain payments for AI agents as potential long-term drivers. He forecast that ETH could eventually reach $22,000, while acknowledging that this is a long-term outlook.
Bullish
The news is mildly bullish for Ethereum. Bitmine plans to buy about 100,000 more ETH before reaching its 5% cap, adding a near-term source of demand. Its stated intention to stop accumulating afterward limits the longer-term buying effect, but may ease concerns that one corporate treasury could gain excessive influence over the network. The cap therefore presents both a demand signal and a governance-related restraint. In the short term, traders may focus on the remaining purchases, Bitmine’s bullish market-cycle comments and its reported staking income. These factors could support sentiment, although the announcement does not guarantee that ETH prices will rise. Lee’s $22,000 target is a forecast, not a confirmed valuation, and his claims about cycle indicators should be treated as opinion rather than proof of a market bottom. Over the longer term, corporate treasury demand, staking and tokenization could support Ethereum adoption. However, the impact depends on whether other firms continue accumulating ETH and whether tokenization and blockchain payment projects translate into sustained network use. As with prior corporate crypto-treasury announcements, initial enthusiasm can fade if buying slows, prices weaken or broader market conditions deteriorate. The net signal is positive but not decisive.
