BitMine Adds ETH as Treasury Value Falls to $15.1B
BitMine Immersion Technologies added 12,535 ETH in the week to October 18, bringing its treasury to 6,041,481 ETH, about 4.9% of Ethereum’s 122.1 million-token supply. Despite the purchase, BitMine’s crypto, cash and marketable securities, and other investments fell in value to $15.1 billion from $16.2 billion a week earlier, as ETH was valued at $2,365. Cash and marketable securities declined for a fourth consecutive week to $582 million. The company also holds 215 BTC and investments in Beast Industries and Eightco Holdings.
BitMine reported that 5,067,309 ETH was staked. Chairman Tom Lee estimated this could generate about $309 million in annual revenue at a 2.58% yield, rising to $369 million if the full ETH treasury were staked. The estimates are company projections; BitMine operates the institutional staking platform MAVAN.
Lee attributed weaker risk appetite to geopolitical tensions, election uncertainty, rising bond yields and concerns about AI funding and safety. He said selling in AI-related stocks had spread to markets in South Korea and Taiwan, adding pressure to crypto. BitMine’s latest release also removed an earlier statement that it was largely finished buying ETH, without explaining the change. Lee described the market pullback as a potential opportunity, but macroeconomic uncertainty and the decline in treasury value remain relevant risks for ETH traders.
Neutral
For ETH, the news has both supportive and negative signals, leaving the likely direct price impact neutral. BitMine’s weekly purchase of 12,535 ETH and its holdings near 4.9% of supply reinforce a large institutional treasury demand narrative. Its substantial staked balance and projected staking income also show continuing commitment to Ethereum, although the revenue figures are company estimates and do not guarantee additional buying.
In the short term, the fall in BitMine’s reported portfolio value, declining cash balance and broader risk-off conditions may weigh more heavily on sentiment than the purchase itself. Rising bond yields, geopolitical tensions, election uncertainty and AI-related market stress can prompt traders to reduce exposure to volatile assets, including ETH. The removal of the earlier statement that BitMine was largely done buying adds uncertainty about its future purchase pace, but does not establish that accumulation has stopped.
Over the longer term, continued accumulation and staking could support confidence in ETH demand and reduce the liquid supply available for trading. However, concentration of holdings in one company, changing treasury strategy and uncertain macro conditions remain risks. Traders may therefore treat the update as a mixed signal rather than a clear directional catalyst, while monitoring ETH price action, staking participation and whether BitMine resumes or slows purchases.
