Trump Sued Over UAE-Linked WLFI Deals and USD1
Circle shareholder Joel Greenberg has sued US President Donald Trump and World Liberty Financial (WLFI), alleging that two UAE-linked crypto deals violated the Constitution’s Foreign Emoluments Clause. The claims have not been proven in court.
The lawsuit cites a reported $500 million deal in which an Abu Dhabi-backed entity acquired a 49% stake in WLFI before Trump began his second term. Greenberg alleges Trump received millions of dollars in proceeds. It also points to a $2 billion investment by UAE state-backed MGX in Binance, reportedly settled using WLFI’s USD1 stablecoin, and claims the deal benefited Trump-linked crypto holdings and increased USD1 circulation.
Greenberg, who says he holds about 10,000 Circle shares, filed a shareholder derivative suit seeking recovery of alleged gains and disclosure of other foreign-source crypto payments. Circle, the White House and WLFI had not publicly commented at the time of reporting. The case could bring further scrutiny to WLFI’s funding and USD1 as US stablecoin rules develop, although standing may be a legal hurdle and earlier emoluments cases against Trump did not reach a ruling on the merits.
For traders, the immediate focus is WLFI and USD1. The lawsuit adds reputational and regulatory uncertainty, but its market impact remains unclear unless it leads to material legal, regulatory or operational consequences.
Neutral
The lawsuit creates a negative headline and could increase scrutiny of WLFI’s funding and USD1’s role in the reported Binance transaction. In the short term, traders may react to developments such as court filings, responses from the named parties, or signs of regulatory interest. That could weigh on sentiment toward WLFI, while USD1’s price is designed to remain stable and would be affected more directly only if confidence in its backing, redemption or operations were questioned.
There is no court finding of wrongdoing, and the case may face a standing challenge. Earlier emoluments cases against Trump did not reach a decision on the merits. Without a concrete legal or operational disruption, the report alone does not establish a reason for sustained price movement in either token. Longer-term effects would depend on whether the case produces new disclosures, regulatory action or changes to WLFI’s business and USD1’s circulation. On the available information, the price impact is uncertain rather than clearly bullish or bearish.
