Claude Solves NSA Curve-Seed Mystery; Bitcoin Unaffected
An Anthropic Claude model has traced five unexplained seeds used in NIST elliptic curves to lrand48, a standard random-number generator, resolving a 25-year cryptography mystery. The model reproduced the published seed for the widely used P-256 curve at the 1,842nd candidate, using timestamps from 1997 and 1998. The result makes the theory of a hidden NSA backdoor less likely, although researchers still do not know why certain candidates were chosen or how other curve parameters were selected. Anthropic says users of the NIST curves do not need to take action. Bitcoin was not affected: it uses secp256k1, a separate curve with few parameters that could be adjusted to conceal a weakness. The discovery does not resolve Bitcoin’s separate, longer-term quantum-computing risk, for which no capable machine currently exists.
Neutral
The discovery is unlikely to have a material, immediate effect on crypto prices or trading. It reduces uncertainty around the provenance of NIST curve seeds and Anthropic says users of those curves do not need to act. Bitcoin uses secp256k1, not the NIST curves at the centre of the story, so the findings do not indicate a new vulnerability in BTC or require changes to Bitcoin wallets. The most likely short-term market response is limited attention or brief discussion of cryptographic security, rather than sustained buying or selling. Similar disclosures about cryptographic standards have tended to matter to markets mainly when they reveal an exploitable weakness or prompt urgent upgrades; this report does neither. Longer term, quantum computing remains a separate risk to some public-key cryptography, including Bitcoin, but the article notes that no machine can currently crack Bitcoin keys and gives no clear timeline for one. Traders may monitor quantum hardware progress and security migration plans, but this discovery alone does not change Bitcoin’s risk profile or market stability. Overall, the news is neutral, with limited direct implications for trading.
