Stablecoins Gain Momentum in AI Agent Payments
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong says growing numbers of AI agents could drive autonomous machine-to-machine payments, with stablecoins and crypto rails potentially becoming the preferred infrastructure. Coinbase data indicates the trend is already producing activity: the x402 payment standard recorded 75.41 million transactions and $24.24 million in volume over 30 days, involving 94,060 buyers and 22,000 sellers. AI agents used USDC in 99% of x402 transactions, while more than 90% ran on Base. Use cases include trading, AI inference, media generation and storage.
Adoption is also expanding through major technology firms. AWS launched a preview of AgentCore Payments with Coinbase and Stripe, supporting stablecoin micropayments, wallet controls and audit logs. Stripe added x402 payments on Base, while Google Cloud and Solana are developing Pay.sh for stablecoin-funded access to Gemini and cloud APIs. The data strengthens the long-term case for stablecoins in AI payments, but Armstrong provided no firm timeline or forecast for mass adoption. For traders, stablecoins are a strategic growth narrative rather than an immediate price catalyst. Sustained growth in stablecoin usage could eventually support USDC, Base-related infrastructure and broader blockchain payment networks.
Neutral
The news is neutral for the direct price outlook because it presents a long-term adoption thesis rather than an immediate change in supply, revenue or token demand. The new x402 transaction figures and participation from AWS, Stripe, Google Cloud and Solana provide stronger evidence that AI payments are moving beyond speculation. This could gradually increase real-world demand for USDC and blockchain payment infrastructure.
In the short term, traders are unlikely to revalue USDC materially because it is designed to maintain a dollar peg, while the data does not establish a clear token-specific catalyst. The absence of an adoption timetable, earnings impact or forecast for sustained transaction growth also limits the potential for an immediate market reaction. Over the longer term, continued growth in machine-to-machine payments could improve stablecoin utility and support activity on Base and related networks. However, competition among payment standards, regulatory constraints and the possibility that transaction growth remains experimental could keep the price impact on individual cryptocurrencies limited.
