Coinbase to Convert 14 MiCA-Restricted Stablecoins in EEA

Coinbase will automatically convert balances of 14 stablecoins in EEA retail accounts on Oct. 30, 2026, if they remain on the platform. The affected tokens are USDT, PYUSD, USD1, DAI, PAX, GUSD, GYEN, BUST, UST, RAI, PAXG, MUSD, USDS and TGBP. Coinbase says the tokens do not meet MiCA requirements, following the end of the stablecoin issuer transition period on July 1, 2026, and guidance from the European Securities and Markets Authority. The conversion will use market prices, with proceeds directed to USDC where suitable or another supported crypto asset or currency. Customers who want to keep the tokens must withdraw them to an external wallet before the deadline. Deposits made after Oct. 30 may not be credited, and recovery is not guaranteed. The restrictions apply to retail customers of Coinbase Luxembourg S.A.; the exchange’s restricted list has grown from six stablecoins in 2024 to 14. The Coinbase MiCA conversion could reduce affected tokens’ access and liquidity for EEA retail traders.
Neutral
The announcement is primarily a regulatory and access change, not a direct change to the reserves or peg mechanisms of the affected stablecoins. In the short term, affected tokens may see reduced Coinbase access and liquidity for EEA retail customers, while some users withdraw or convert holdings before the deadline. That could create localized selling or conversion flows, but is unlikely by itself to materially move the broader prices of the stablecoins, which are designed to track fiat currencies. Over the longer term, the restriction may shift EEA trading and custody toward MiCA-compliant stablecoins such as USDC and supported alternatives. The expanded list and fixed conversion deadline could prompt traders to review platform eligibility and deposit risks, but the impact on the tokens’ overall market prices is expected to remain limited; therefore, the overall price view is neutral.
