Coinbase, Gennius Plan ONED USD Bank Rollout in Latin America
Coinbase and fintech firm Gennius plan to offer the ONED USD stablecoin through banks across Latin America, beginning in Argentina. Eligible customers could convert bank deposits and loyalty rewards into ONED USD, transfer it around the clock and spend it with participating banks’ Visa cards. ONED USD is backed one-to-one by USDC held in Coinbase custody. Gennius says it works with more than 85 financial institutions and operates over 520 loyalty programmes, connecting banks’ existing systems to Coinbase’s issuance and custody services. The announcement gives no launch date, participating banks or expected transaction volumes. Wider access to ONED USD could support stablecoin payments and increase demand for USDC reserves, but the market effect will depend on adoption and local regulation.
Neutral
The news points to a possible expansion in the use of ONED USD and USDC, but it is a planned bank-integrated service with no confirmed launch date, participating institutions or transaction forecasts. In the short term, that leaves little basis for traders to price in a measurable change in demand, and ONED USD is designed to maintain a stable value rather than appreciate. Over the longer term, successful adoption could increase demand for USDC as the backing asset and strengthen payment use cases. However, any effect on USDC would likely depend on actual reserve growth, customer activity and regulatory approval; the announcement alone is not evidence of those outcomes. Overall, the likely price impact on the mentioned cryptocurrencies is limited and neutral.
