Coinbase Prediction Markets Top $200M Annualized Revenue
Coinbase said its prediction markets business has surpassed $200 million in annualized revenue, despite a challenging crypto market in the third quarter. Revenue from the product has grown at an 82% compound quarterly rate since launch, and daily prediction traders increased more than 60% from Q2. More than half of contracts traded in Q3 were non-sports events. Coinbase also said it received CFTC approval to list its own prediction market contracts, which could improve the business’s economics.
The exchange reported $1.2 billion in revenue, unchanged from Q2 despite a 10% market-wide decline in crypto trading volume. Net income was $719 million, largely due to unrealized gains on crypto held for investment, compared with adjusted net income of $78 million. Subscription and services revenue reached $570 million, while Coinbase One subscribers rose 24% year over year to a record high.
Neutral
The news is positive for Coinbase’s business diversification but has a limited direct signal for the wider crypto market, so the overall assessment is neutral. Prediction markets have become a meaningful revenue stream, and rapid user growth plus CFTC approval may strengthen Coinbase’s future earnings and reduce its reliance on spot trading activity. The record Coinbase One membership and resilient quarterly revenue also suggest that the exchange is retaining customers through a weaker trading environment.
However, the report does not establish a broad increase in demand for cryptocurrencies or provide a clear catalyst for BTC, ETH or other tokens. Coinbase’s $719 million GAAP net income was largely driven by unrealized gains on investment assets, while adjusted net income was only $78 million. Traders may therefore distinguish headline profit from recurring operating performance. In the short term, the results could support COIN shares and sentiment toward Coinbase-related activity, but broader crypto prices are likely to remain more sensitive to market liquidity, token prices and trading volumes. Over the longer term, prediction markets and subscription services could diversify Coinbase’s revenue and improve resilience if growth continues; regulatory execution and competition remain important risks. Similar exchange earnings reports have often produced a stronger reaction in the company’s shares than in the broader crypto market.
