New Jersey Reopens Coinbase Staking as Four Cases Continue
New Jersey has withdrawn its 2023 cease-and-desist order against Coinbase staking and canceled a proposed $5 million penalty, allowing the exchange to restore staking access for state residents. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said access would return soon. The withdrawal was issued without prejudice and does not rule on the merits, so regulators could bring a new case. The Coinbase staking dispute is therefore not fully resolved.
Cases remain in California, Maryland, Wisconsin and Washington. California, Maryland and Wisconsin restricted Coinbase from accepting new staking funds; Washington is seeking a $4 million penalty. Coinbase estimates users missed more than $89 million in staking rewards in California and over $15 million in New Jersey since 2023. The New Jersey decision is a regulatory win, but it is not a legal precedent and its immediate market impact may be limited while the other cases continue. Their outcomes could affect Coinbase staking revenue and claims for missed rewards. US legislation and election results may also shape crypto regulation. Ethereum staking stands at 43.8 million ETH, or 35.9% of supply, with yields near 2.6%; Solana yields are around 6%.
Neutral
The New Jersey decision is favorable for Coinbase staking access, but it does not directly establish a price catalyst for ETH or SOL. The order was withdrawn without a ruling on the merits, and four state cases remain, limiting the significance of the change for the broader crypto market. In the short term, traders may view the news as modestly supportive of regulated staking access, but the unresolved legal risks and lack of a direct change to token supply or demand make a sustained price response unlikely. Over the longer term, outcomes in the remaining cases and US crypto legislation could influence staking availability, participation and yields. Those factors may affect sentiment toward ETH and SOL, though this development alone is unlikely to materially alter either asset’s price trend or market stability.
