Crude Oil Prices Test Resistance Amid Hormuz Risks
Crude oil prices pulled back on Thursday but remained elevated as renewed US-Iran tensions raised concerns about supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude fell 0.6% to $95.04 a barrel, while WTI declined 0.4% to $90.63. Both benchmarks recently reached their highest intraday levels since July 24.
Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz dropped to four commodity vessels on Wednesday, versus a recent 10-day average of about 13. Iran also expanded its blacklist of vessels barred from using the route. The developments increase risks for crude oil, LNG and refined-product shipments. The waterway normally carries about one-fifth of global oil consumption.
US crude inventories fell by 2.6 million barrels, according to preliminary API data, before the later official estimate showed a 4.5 million-barrel decline to 424.5 million barrels for the week ended August 28. Refinery utilization reached 98%. OPEC+ is expected to keep its October production policy unchanged at its Sunday meeting.
Technical levels remain important for traders. WTI is testing resistance between $90 and $92. A sustained break above $92.27 could support further gains, while failure may trigger a deeper correction. Brent faces resistance between $94 and $98; a close above $98 could target $113.85. Easing US-Iran tensions or restored shipping could remove the geopolitical premium from crude oil prices. Higher energy costs may also reinforce inflation concerns and create short-term volatility across risk assets, including cryptocurrencies.
Neutral
The news has no direct fundamental impact on a specific cryptocurrency, so the overall crypto price view is neutral. In the short term, higher crude oil prices and supply disruption risks could lift inflation expectations, strengthen volatility and encourage some investors to reduce exposure to speculative assets such as Bitcoin and altcoins. This would create a bearish risk for crypto if markets price in tighter monetary policy or broader risk aversion.
However, the effect is not one-directional. Geopolitical stress can also increase demand for alternative assets, while a reversal in oil prices could ease inflation concerns and support risk appetite. Traders should monitor Bitcoin’s correlation with equities, US Treasury yields, the dollar and broader commodity markets. The crypto impact is likely to remain limited unless the Hormuz disruption becomes prolonged or causes a sustained global inflation shock.
