Crypto Billionaires Pledge £72M to Reform UK
BitMEX co-founder Ben Delo and crypto investor Christopher Harborne have pledged a combined £72 million to Reform UK. Delo announced a £36 million donation on 11 September 2026, described as the largest single donation to a British political party. Harborne announced an equivalent pledge the following day.
The Reform UK donations significantly exceed the £15.49 million in donations and public funds the party reported receiving during the first two quarters of 2026. Each £36 million pledge is also larger than the party’s combined first-half receipts.
Electoral Commission records show that both donors had already supported Reform UK earlier in 2026. Harborne donated £3 million and Delo £2 million in January. The September announcements therefore represent a sharp increase in existing political funding rather than their first contributions.
The pledges could influence debate over political finance, regulatory scrutiny and the role of wealthy crypto-industry figures in UK politics. However, announced pledges should not be treated as identical to donations formally accepted and recorded by the Electoral Commission.
Neutral
The news is neutral for cryptocurrency markets because it concerns political donations rather than crypto prices, network activity, regulation of digital assets, or company fundamentals. The £72 million pledge may increase public and regulatory attention on wealthy crypto investors, but it does not directly change supply, demand or liquidity for major tokens.
In the short term, there could be limited sentiment effects if traders interpret the story as evidence of growing political influence for the crypto sector. Any reaction would likely be confined to crypto-related equities, exchanges or politically sensitive assets rather than the broader market. Increased scrutiny could also create headline risk if regulators investigate the source, structure or acceptance of the funds.
Over the long term, the impact depends on whether the donations contribute to policies favourable to digital assets or instead trigger tighter political-finance and crypto regulation. Similar large political donations and lobbying campaigns have historically influenced sector narratives, but they have rarely produced sustained price moves without accompanying legislative or regulatory action. Traders should therefore monitor UK policy developments, Electoral Commission filings and broader Bitcoin market indicators rather than treat the pledges as a direct trading signal.
