Crypto Liquidations Top $476M in One Hour as Longs Are Hit
Crypto liquidations reached $476 million in the hour to 10:35 on 15 October, according to CoinGlass. Long positions accounted for $457 million, or more than 95% of the total, indicating sharp downside pressure and widespread forced selling.
Binance recorded about $292 million in liquidations, around 62% of the market total. Bybit and Hyperliquid followed with $63.34 million and $33.56 million. ETH liquidations were about $199 million, while BTC liquidations reached $110 million; together, the two assets made up more than 60% of the total.
At the time of the report, BTC was trading near $81,000, down 2.58% over 24 hours, while ETH was around $2,362, down 5.54%. Across the full 24-hour period, 174,600 traders were liquidated for a combined $922 million. The largest single liquidation was a $12.03 million BTCUSDT position on Binance.
Bearish
The liquidation data is a short-term bearish signal: more than 95% of the hourly liquidations were long positions, while BTC and ETH prices were both lower. Forced selling can add to downward momentum, and traders may respond by reducing leverage, tightening risk limits or opening short positions. The concentration of liquidations on major exchanges and in BTC and ETH also shows that the sell-off was broad across key derivatives markets.
Similar liquidation cascades have occurred during previous sharp crypto market declines. When prices fall through heavily leveraged positions, automatic closures can accelerate the move and trigger further liquidations. However, this report is a snapshot rather than proof of a lasting trend. Once excess leverage has been cleared, liquidations can subside and prices may stabilise or rebound, particularly if spot demand returns. For the longer-term outlook, traders would need to assess follow-through in spot prices, open interest, funding rates and trading volume. The figures alone do not establish whether the market has entered a sustained downturn.
