Crypto Goes Mainstream as Adoption, Stablecoins and Institutions Surge
Crypto adoption accelerated in 2025, according to a16z’s State of Crypto report. The total crypto market value topped $4 trillion, while an estimated 40–70 million people actively used crypto, about 10 million more than a year earlier. Bitcoin rose above $126,000, and crypto exchange-traded products held more than $175 billion in assets.
Stablecoins became a major payment and settlement tool. Their annual transaction volume reached $46 trillion, or $9 trillion after adjustments, while total supply exceeded $300 billion. Tether and USDC accounted for 87% of supply. The report says stablecoins are increasingly used beyond crypto trading and could support demand for US Treasuries.
Traditional finance and technology firms, including Visa, BlackRock, JPMorgan, Stripe and PayPal, expanded or announced crypto products. US policy also became more supportive: the GENIUS Act became law, while the House approved the CLARITY Act. Onchain activity broadened across tokenized real-world assets, decentralized exchanges and prediction markets. Meanwhile, blockchain networks processed more than 3,400 transactions per second, over 100 times the throughput reported five years earlier.
For traders, the report points to stronger long-term adoption and infrastructure, but its figures do not guarantee near-term price gains. Crypto market moves will still depend on liquidity, regulation and investor risk appetite.
Bullish
The report is structurally bullish for crypto: it highlights rising active-user estimates, record stablecoin supply and transaction activity, growing institutional access, and faster, cheaper blockchain infrastructure. These developments may support demand for BTC, ETH and major smart-contract networks over the long term. US legislation and clearer rules could also reduce uncertainty for financial firms and builders, though the report’s policy developments do not eliminate regulatory risk.
The market impact is less certain in the short term. The report is an industry overview rather than a new catalyst with a direct, immediate flow of capital. Traders may respond positively to institutional adoption and stablecoin growth, but prices will remain sensitive to interest rates, liquidity, positioning and broader risk sentiment. Past launches of spot crypto exchange-traded products have helped widen access and attract inflows, but product launches have not guaranteed uninterrupted price gains. Likewise, improved network throughput can strengthen the long-term investment case without ensuring that token prices rise in step with usage.
Stablecoin growth and tokenized assets may deepen onchain liquidity and connect crypto markets more closely with traditional finance. However, concentration in leading issuers and networks, competition among chains, and the gap between crypto ownership and regular onchain use remain important risks. Overall, the evidence supports a bullish long-term view, while near-term trading implications are conditional rather than assured.
