Daixin Team Ransomware Attack Targets NTMWD Water Utility

The North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) was hit by a cyberattack, attributed to the Daixin Team ransomware gang, resulting in operational disruptions. The attack affected the district's business computer network and phone system but did not impact water, wastewater, or solid waste services provided to over two million North Texas residents. Daixin Team has previously targeted healthcare and public health organizations and is known for using phishing and exploiting VPN vulnerabilities. Third-party forensic specialists are investigating the extent of unauthorized activity, including possible data breaches involving personal information. This follows the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) response to similar attacks on water and wastewater systems.
