Dogecoin ETF Closes as Demand Trails Solana Fund

Bitwise’s Dogecoin ETF, BWOW, is set to stop trading on October 14 and be liquidated on October 22, after failing to attract significant investor demand. Launched in November 2025, the Dogecoin ETF held about $725,900 in assets as of October 7, with September trading volume of roughly $51,500. Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley called its performance “tragic” and said ETF investors appear to have different preferences from people who buy crypto directly through trading apps. Dogecoin’s market capitalisation was about $13.1 billion, with daily trading volume above $1.2 billion, suggesting its popularity in crypto markets has not translated into demand for the Dogecoin ETF. By contrast, Bitwise’s Solana staking ETF had about $1.3 billion in net assets; Horsley said staking adds appeal, but interest in Solana itself is the main driver. He has also highlighted potential in crypto and AI, including NEAR’s cross-chain asset-transfer feature, and said Bitwise has filed for two AI-related ETFs. For investors with a five-year horizon, he favours diversified crypto funds over individual-token bets. The contrasting ETF results underline that fund access does not guarantee demand for an asset, and Dogecoin’s ETF closure is not necessarily a measure of its direct-market trading activity.
Bearish
The closure of the Dogecoin ETF and its very small asset base are a negative signal for institutional investment demand and may weigh on DOGE sentiment in the short term. Traders could interpret the shutdown as evidence that meme-coin interest is not translating into lasting demand through regulated investment products. However, DOGE’s much larger market capitalisation and direct trading volume indicate that the ETF represented only a small part of its market activity. The closure therefore does not, by itself, demonstrate broad weakness in DOGE spot demand or imply a major change in market stability. Over the longer term, price direction is more likely to depend on overall crypto-market conditions, Dogecoin-specific adoption and trading activity than on the failure of this single ETF. The expected effect on DOGE is mildly negative rather than a decisive bearish catalyst.
