DogeOS Testnet Adds EVM Smart Contracts to Dogecoin
DogeOS opened its public testnet, Chikyū, on 30 September 2026. The EVM-compatible layer is designed to bring smart contracts and decentralised applications to Dogecoin, with transactions settling to the DOGE network. It targets about 300 transactions per second and three-second blocks, compared with roughly 30 transactions per second and one-minute blocks on Dogecoin’s base layer. Users pay fees in DOGE, and developers can use Ethereum-compatible tools.
Projects named across the launch updates include Superposition Finance, Derps, USDoge, Snag and Barkswap, spanning lending, perpetual trading, stablecoins and prediction markets. Further applications, including liquidity tools, options, launchpads and games, are planned, but availability depends on each project’s progress. DogeOS was developed by the team behind the MyDoge wallet and operates separately from Dogecoin’s base layer.
The project raised $6.9 million in a May 2025 seed round led by Polychain Capital. Its current security model relies in part on validators, a trusted execution environment and a permissioned sequencer. A proposed Dogecoin Core upgrade, OP_CHECKZKP, which would enable the base chain to verify zero-knowledge proofs, has not been implemented. DogeOS has not announced a mainnet date.
For DOGE traders, the testnet points to potential longer-term utility beyond payments, but does not yet confirm near-term demand. Testnet usage, application launches, liquidity, DOGE trading volume and progress towards a more decentralised mainnet are key indicators to watch.
Neutral
In the short term, the public testnet is a development milestone, not a confirmed source of new DOGE demand. There is no mainnet date, the listed applications remain at different stages, and the network’s reliance on a permissioned sequencer and trusted components may limit confidence in its decentralisation. Traders may watch testnet activity and DOGE volume, but the launch alone provides little basis for expecting a sustained price move.
Longer term, successful applications and growing liquidity could increase DOGE’s utility and create additional demand for fees. The performance targets and Ethereum-compatible tooling may help attract developers, but they are testnet goals rather than proven mainnet results. Until Dogecoin can verify the rollup’s proofs natively or the project otherwise strengthens its security and decentralisation, adoption and token-price benefits remain uncertain. The potential upside is therefore balanced by execution, security and timing risks.
