Drift Hack Compensation Begins, DFX Redemption Rate Nears 1%
Drift, now known as Velocity, began distributing and redeeming its DFX compensation token on 1 October after an attack caused about $295 million in user losses on 1 April. Under the plan, victims receive one DFX for each dollar of approved losses. However, the initial redemption price was about $0.0104 per DFX, meaning a user with a $10,000 approved loss would receive only about $104 by redeeming immediately. DFX redemption is permanent: redeemed tokens are burned, and users give up their share of future recovery distributions. Victims can redeem all or part of their DFX, hold it, or sell it on the secondary market. The scheme is not a guaranteed staged repayment of the remaining balance. Future recovery funds may come from Velocity protocol revenue, partner support and recovered stolen assets, but the timing and amount remain uncertain. DFX is separate from Drift’s DRIFT governance token. DRIFT traded at about $0.01919 on 3 October, down roughly 6.2% over 24 hours, with approximately $2.1 million in trading volume.
Bearish
The immediate market signal is bearish because the DFX redemption rate is only about 1.04% of face value, highlighting the severity of the loss and potentially damaging confidence in Drift, Velocity and DeFi platforms. Users who need liquidity may sell DFX on the secondary market, creating additional supply pressure. The 6.2% daily decline in DRIFT also indicates weak near-term sentiment, although the governance token is not directly used to calculate compensation. Similar post-hack compensation events often produce volatility, distrust and selling pressure when victims receive liquid tokens or when recovery terms are unclear. In the short term, DFX price discovery, redemption activity and any recovered-fund announcements could cause sharp price moves. DRIFT may also face reputational pressure, though its price will depend more on protocol usage, revenue and broader crypto-market conditions. Over the long term, successful asset recovery and transparent distributions could reduce the negative impact and support confidence. Conversely, weak recovery, heavy DFX selling or further operational problems could prolong bearish sentiment and increase concerns about DeFi counterparty and smart-contract risks.
