ESMA Sets MiCA Deadline for Non-Compliant Stablecoins
The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has told EU crypto-asset service providers to stop offering services involving stablecoins that do not comply with the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). The guidance covers trading, exchange, custody, transfers and investment advice, and firms must use controls to prevent customers from buying or increasing their exposure to affected tokens.
Existing positions must be addressed by 8 January 2027. Until then, national regulators may permit limited, supervised exit services, including selling, converting or withdrawing stablecoins. The guidance builds on restrictions ESMA outlined in January 2025. The MiCA deadline could lead exchanges and other platforms to restrict access or delist non-compliant stablecoins for EU users, potentially affecting their regional liquidity and trading activity.
Neutral
The guidance does not identify a specific stablecoin or change the value mechanism of any particular token, so its direct price impact on an individual cryptocurrency is uncertain. In the short term, affected issuers and platforms could face selling or conversion activity as EU customers reduce positions, while trading access and liquidity may fall if exchanges restrict or delist tokens. This could increase volatility for the stablecoins concerned in EU markets. Over the longer term, the 8 January 2027 deadline gives firms and customers time to adjust, and compliance may encourage activity to shift towards MiCA-compliant stablecoins. The measure is therefore more likely to reshape access and regional liquidity than to drive a broad directional move in crypto prices.
