Ethereum Deleveraging Deepens as ETH Market Cap Falls $54B
Ethereum has lost about $54 billion in market capitalisation over three weeks, while ETH has fallen roughly 15% amid weakness across the altcoin market. Analyst Darkfost attributes the decline to falling prices, cascading liquidations and traders reducing risk. Ethereum deleveraging is also visible in derivatives data: Binance ETH open interest dropped $1.3 billion, or nearly 20%, over the past month to $5.7 billion, while total market open interest fell to $11.5 billion. Darkfost says such deleveraging can be part of a normal correction, and fear may emerge near its later stages. In July, a steeper drop in ETH open interest was followed by stabilisation and a rally of more than 32%, briefly taking ETH above $2,800. That history offers context, not a guarantee; reduced leverage may ease liquidation pressure, but the price decline remains a short-term risk for traders.
Neutral
The signal for ETH is mixed. The roughly 15% price decline, shrinking market capitalisation and lower open interest point to near-term weakness and reduced risk appetite. Further liquidations or continued selling could keep pressure on ETH. However, falling open interest also indicates that leverage is being removed, which may reduce the chance of further forced liquidations and help market conditions stabilise. The July precedent, when a sharper contraction in open interest preceded a strong rebound, is a useful comparison but not a reliable forecast. In the short term, traders may remain cautious until price action and derivatives positioning improve; over a longer horizon, a completed deleveraging phase could create a healthier base for recovery, though the data alone does not confirm that a bottom is in.
