Ethereum Price Stalls as Weak Momentum Raises Breakout Risk

Ethereum price extended its consolidation from September 7 into September 8, trading near $2,475 and falling about 0.6% to 0.7% over 24 hours. ETH remained in a broad $2,450-$2,550 range after failing to hold above $2,500, while mixed spot Ethereum ETF flows and uncertainty over Federal Reserve policy limited momentum. The 4-hour Bollinger Band midpoint near $2,485 is the first resistance, followed by $2,517 and the $2,540-$2,550 zone. A sustained break above this area could target $2,600 and, potentially, $2,722. Support is near $2,450, with a break below it exposing ETH to $2,400 and additional long liquidations. Daily support remains stronger near the Supertrend level of $2,318.72. The 4-hour ADX fell from 15.69 to 11.1, signalling a weak trend and a high risk of false breakouts. About $29 million in ETH futures positions were liquidated over 24 hours, while open interest remained near $33.3 billion. Liquidation clusters are concentrated around $2,445-$2,460 below and $2,515-$2,550 above. Traders are watching upcoming US Producer Price Index and Consumer Price Index data, as well as the Federal Reserve’s September 15-16 meeting. Strong employment data has increased expectations of tighter policy. Higher inflation could pressure Ethereum price, while softer data may support ETH and other risk assets. Until a clear breakout occurs, range trading remains the dominant strategy.
Neutral
The immediate outlook for Ethereum is neutral because ETH remains trapped between major support and resistance levels, while the very low 4-hour ADX indicates limited trend strength. A break above $2,517-$2,550 could revive bullish momentum and open a path towards $2,600 and potentially $2,722. However, a move below $2,450 could trigger long liquidations and push ETH towards $2,400. Short-term trading is likely to remain volatile and range-bound, with liquidation clusters increasing the risk of sharp but temporary moves. Strong employment data and the possibility of tighter Federal Reserve policy are additional headwinds, particularly if upcoming inflation data is elevated. Softer inflation could improve risk appetite and support an upside breakout. Over the longer term, ETH remains above its daily Supertrend support at $2,318.72 and above the broader technical support zone, so the market structure is not decisively bearish. However, weakening momentum, mixed ETF flows and macroeconomic uncertainty do not yet provide a strong bullish catalyst. Traders may therefore favour range strategies until price confirms a sustained break in either direction.
