AI Warning Raises ECDSA Wallet Security Concerns
Ethereum researcher Justin Drake has warned that artificial intelligence could threaten ECDSA, the digital-signature cryptography used by many Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets. Citing OpenAI’s recent mathematical research, he said a worst-case risk could emerge within months, before quantum computers are capable of breaking the algorithm. The warning is a risk scenario, not evidence that AI has cracked ECDSA. Drake recommends a gradual, orderly migration of funds, prioritising large holders and moving remaining assets to fresh addresses after signing transactions, which can reveal public keys on-chain. He cautioned that rushed transfers could create operational risks. The warning adds urgency to post-quantum security efforts, including plans to replace ECDSA, but the immediate threat remains uncertain.
Neutral
The warning creates a potential security overhang for BTC and ETH, but Drake presented a possible future risk rather than evidence that ECDSA has been broken. In the short term, the uncertainty could prompt some traders and large holders to move funds or reduce exposure, potentially adding volatility. However, there is no confirmed exploit or immediate change to either network’s functioning, so a sustained price reaction is not established. Longer term, credible evidence of an imminent attack could weigh on both assets until wallet migration and post-quantum safeguards are available. Conversely, orderly upgrades could reduce that concern. For now, the unclear timeline and absence of a demonstrated breach support a neutral price-impact assessment.
