Agent Harnesses Are Evolving, Not Disappearing

Agent harnesses are not becoming obsolete, but their role is changing as AI models absorb general-purpose skills once supplied by external tools and rules. A Peking University team’s Harness-Zero study trained Qwen3.5-9B using a specialised harness and corrected task runs reviewed by a stronger model. The resulting model improved average task success by 21 percentage points and outperformed the original model-plus-harness setup on average, although it lagged in chemistry, where domain knowledge and specialist tools mattered. The findings suggest agent harnesses will still be needed for application-specific tools, data, context management and safeguards. Their components must be retested as models improve: teams should track model and harness versions, log interventions, run evaluations and remove elements that no longer help. For AI developers, harness maintenance is likely to become an ongoing, evidence-based process rather than a one-time build.
Neutral
The article concerns AI agent design and training, not cryptocurrencies, blockchain networks or digital-asset markets. It reports a 21-percentage-point improvement in task success for a distilled model, but offers no direct catalyst for crypto prices, trading volume or market stability. Short-term crypto trading is therefore unlikely to respond materially, aside from possible indirect sentiment effects if investors interpret AI advances as supportive of technology-sector growth. Over the longer term, more capable and efficient AI systems could affect investment in technology firms and broader risk appetite, which may sometimes spill over into crypto markets. However, such effects are indirect and would depend on wider conditions, including interest rates, liquidity, Bitcoin and Ether price trends, and regulatory developments. Unlike crypto-specific events such as protocol upgrades, exchange failures or token-related policy decisions, this research alone does not establish a clear directional signal. The expected market impact is neutral.
