Fed Rate Decision: Bitcoin Traders Brace for a Hawkish Hold
Markets expect the Federal Reserve to hold its benchmark rate at 3.75%-4.00% at today’s decision, with futures pricing in odds above 90%. The Fed raised rates in September for the first time since 2023, as inflation reached 3.7% and oil prices neared $100 a barrel. Hiring has slowed, adding to the challenge of balancing inflation and economic growth.
The Fed rate decision may still unsettle markets if officials signal another increase. Futures put the odds of a quarter-point hike at the Dec. 8-9 meeting at 75%-80%. Bitcoin is trading near $80,700, where traders are watching a resistance zone. Higher Treasury yields can make volatile assets such as Bitcoin less attractive, while leveraged positions may amplify moves through liquidations. The Fed’s statement and any dissenting votes could therefore influence short-term crypto trading.
Bearish
The expected rate hold is largely priced in, so the decision itself may have limited impact. The risk for crypto is the possibility of a hawkish hold: officials could keep rates unchanged while reinforcing the prospect of another increase in December. Persistent inflation, oil near $100 a barrel and Treasury yields around 5% may keep financial conditions tight. Higher yields can make low-yielding, volatile assets such as Bitcoin less appealing and encourage traders to reduce risk.
Bitcoin near $80,700 is also approaching a zone where sellers have previously capped rallies. If the Fed’s statement or votes strengthen expectations of a December hike, short-term selling could intensify; leveraged positions may add volatility through liquidations. A similar dynamic followed Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s August Jackson Hole speech, when about $481 million in crypto positions were liquidated within 24 hours, most of them long positions. That example shows how policy signals can magnify moves, though it does not predict the direction or scale of the next reaction.
Over the longer term, the effect will depend on whether inflation cools and the Fed’s policy path changes. A hold without a stronger tightening signal could ease pressure on crypto, while sustained inflation and higher-for-longer rates would remain a headwind. The market response will also depend on positioning and incoming economic data, not just the rate decision.
