Hargreaves Lansdown Opens BTC and ETH ETN Trading

Hargreaves Lansdown, the UK’s largest retail investment platform, has opened cryptocurrency exchange-traded note (ETN) trading to its roughly 2 million investors. The initial offering includes nine BTC and ETH ETNs from issuers such as iShares, WisdomTree and 21Shares. Annual fees range from 0% to 0.35%. The products are available to users of Hargreaves Lansdown’s Advanced Investing service. Investors must pass an appropriateness assessment and observe a 24-hour cooling-off period before their first trade. The move expands regulated retail access to Bitcoin and Ethereum exposure in the UK. It also marks a shift from the platform’s warning last October that retail investors should avoid cryptocurrencies.
Bullish
The news is bullish because it gives a large UK retail investor base regulated access to BTC and ETH exposure through established ETN products. The initial launch of nine products, relatively low fees and involvement from major issuers could improve product visibility and reduce operational barriers for investors who cannot or do not want to hold crypto directly. In the short term, the announcement may support sentiment and attract incremental buying, although the effect is likely to be limited because the products are subject to appropriateness checks, a 24-hour cooling-off period and access restrictions. ETN trading also does not necessarily result in immediate, one-for-one spot-market inflows. In the longer term, broader distribution through mainstream financial platforms could strengthen institutional and retail adoption of BTC and ETH. Similar access expansions through regulated investment products have historically improved market legitimacy and investor participation, but they have not prevented price volatility or macro-driven sell-offs. Traders should monitor actual product inflows, spreads, trading volumes and wider risk appetite rather than treating the launch alone as a sustained price signal.
