HIVE Digital Expands Bitcoin-to-AI Cloud Pivot
HIVE Digital Technologies is expanding its Bitcoin mining-to-AI infrastructure pivot through subsidiary BUZZ HPC. The company initially announced a three-year, $220 million Bell AI Fabric contract to deploy 2,304 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs for Canadian AI firm Cohere at Bell’s facility in Merritt, British Columbia. The infrastructure will remain in Canada, with Bell providing data-centre and network services and Hypertec supplying Canadian-built hardware.
A later update added a five-year agreement worth about $350 million with an unnamed enterprise for 2,016 NVIDIA GB300 GPUs. Together, the contracts are valued at roughly $570 million and are expected to support about $180 million in annual recurring GPU cloud revenue by September 2026. BUZZ HPC also reported average daily revenue above $1 million as of 10 September.
HIVE Digital expects the Cohere project to go live between late 2026 and early 2027. It is also planning a 320 MW AI gigafactory in the Greater Toronto Area, targeted for the second half of 2027. The site could host more than 100,000 GPUs and require about C$3.5 billion in investment.
For crypto traders, the HIVE Digital strategy could reduce the company’s dependence on Bitcoin mining revenue and mining margins. However, major risks include financing requirements, customer concentration, reliance on an unnamed enterprise client and execution delays. The news is strategically positive for HIVE Digital’s business diversification, but its direct impact on BTC is likely limited. Traders should monitor GPU cloud revenue, new contracts, project funding and Bitcoin miner sentiment.
Neutral
The announcement is primarily a corporate infrastructure and revenue-diversification development for HIVE Digital, rather than a direct change to Bitcoin’s supply, demand or network fundamentals. In the short term, the news could improve sentiment toward Bitcoin miners by showing that mining operators can monetise power and data-centre capacity through AI cloud services. This may support miner-related equities, but it is unlikely to create a sustained BTC price catalyst.
Over the longer term, successful GPU deployments and recurring AI revenue could make HIVE Digital less sensitive to Bitcoin mining margins and cryptocurrency market cycles. However, the strategy requires substantial capital, depends on large customers and faces execution and construction risks. If financing pressure, customer concentration or project delays become concerns, the market could reassess the benefit to HIVE Digital without materially changing its view of BTC. Historical reactions to mining companies entering AI infrastructure have generally been stronger in the companies’ shares than in Bitcoin itself. Therefore, the direct impact on BTC is best classified as neutral.
