Hyperliquid Unstakes 3.75M HYPE, Half Sold OTC
Hyperliquid Labs unstaked 3.75 million HYPE on October 7, worth about $330 million to $332 million and equal to roughly 1.5% of circulating supply. The release is the project’s largest HYPE distribution to date, although October’s vesting schedule had listed 9.9 million tokens. The team said the allocation is covered by a firm agreement with an undisclosed institutional counterparty and is not intended for public-market sales. A later update reported that 1.875 million HYPE had been sent to five OTC buyer wallets, while the other half had not yet been transferred. Separate on-chain observations showed tokens being consolidated, with 1.25 million restaked and 2.5 million remaining in an address suspected of being linked to an institutional buyer; these wallet movements do not fully match the reported OTC split. OTC distribution may limit immediate exchange selling pressure, but buyer identities, pricing and resale terms remain unknown. HYPE rose after the news, while the large unlock and unclear destination of some tokens remain supply risks for traders.
Bullish
The immediate price impact is mildly positive: Hyperliquid Labs said the tokens were committed to an institutional counterparty rather than intended for public-market sales, and the reported OTC transfers may reduce the amount of HYPE hitting exchanges at once. HYPE also rose after the announcement, suggesting traders initially viewed the arrangement as limiting near-term sell pressure. However, the release is sizeable at about 1.5% of circulating supply, and the reported OTC split differs from some on-chain wallet movements. The buyers, purchase price and any resale restrictions are not known, so the tokens could still add supply later if recipients sell or unstake them. In the short term, sentiment may remain supported if exchange inflows stay limited; over the longer term, traders are likely to monitor wallet activity, staking changes and subsequent team distributions before treating the event as a lasting bullish signal.
