Hyperliquid Retail Traders Lose $280M as Fees Bite

An analysis of nearly 400,000 wallets trading Hyperliquid perpetual futures through six retail apps estimates cumulative losses of about $280 million. Since 10 November 2025, users lost around $126 million through these apps, with fees accounting for more than half of the losses. App-added Builder Fees on top of Hyperliquid’s trading fees make frequent trading especially costly for small accounts, which commonly deposited only $30–$60. Bitcoin (BTC) made up nearly half of trading volume and was the largest source of losses; BTC trading fees alone exceeded users’ net gains from closed positions. HIP-3 markets, including oil, silver and gold, also became a major trading category. Monthly active traders rose sharply from November to September, driven largely by Invo and fomo, but retention remained weak: about half of monthly active users were new, and only around one in seven new traders remained active after three months. The findings suggest Hyperliquid’s retail growth relies heavily on continued user acquisition, while turnover, fees and liquidations continue to erode trader capital.
Bearish
The findings are modestly negative for HYPE, Hyperliquid’s native token, because reports of substantial retail losses and high app-related fees could weaken confidence in the platform and discourage new users or trading activity. In the short term, traders may react to the figures by reducing exposure to Hyperliquid-related assets, although the analysis does not directly indicate changes in HYPE’s price, protocol revenue or market liquidity. Over the longer term, persistently poor retention and perceptions that frequent trading is costly could constrain user growth and weigh on sentiment toward HYPE. The effect is not necessarily severe: rising activity and the platform’s broad range of markets may remain supportive, and the losses do not by themselves establish a deterioration in protocol fundamentals. Overall, the news presents a negative sentiment risk rather than a direct market-wide catalyst.
