KOSPI Sell-Off Raises Short-Term Crypto Risks
BitMine’s Tom Lee warned that South Korea’s sharp KOSPI sell-off could add short-term pressure to crypto markets. The index fell more than 5% and dropped over 7% intraday, briefly slipping below 6,000 points; the Korea Exchange activated its five-minute sidecar mechanism. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix also fell sharply.
Lee said margin calls could force Korean investors to sell other assets, including crypto. The risk is notable because South Korean retail traders are influential in digital-asset markets. Crypto was already volatile: Bitcoin briefly fell to about $81,000 before rebounding towards $84,000, Ether moved back above $2,500, and XRP traded near $1.37. Around $810 million in crypto positions were liquidated in 24 hours, roughly 85% of them longs, although the reports do not confirm that the stock sell-off caused these liquidations.
Traders will be watching for further equity-market liquidations, changes in crypto liquidity and funding rates, and whether the KOSPI stabilises. The episode points to near-term downside and volatility risks for crypto, including ETH, but does not establish a lasting trend. Separately, BitMine reportedly holds about 6.03 million ETH, or 4.9% of its supply, following a recent purchase.
Bearish
The immediate price impact is bearish because the KOSPI sell-off raises the risk that investors facing equity margin calls will sell crypto to raise cash. The reports describe an already volatile market, with Bitcoin briefly falling to about $81,000 and roughly $810 million in crypto positions liquidated over 24 hours, most of them longs. These figures point to fragile short-term sentiment and the potential for further volatility in BTC, ETH and XRP. However, the reports do not establish that the equity sell-off caused the liquidations, so the connection should be treated as a risk rather than a confirmed trigger. Over the longer term, the event alone does not determine crypto’s direction; the impact will depend on whether Korean equities and crypto liquidity stabilise or broader forced selling continues.
