AI Investor Leopold Returns With Lower Leverage

Leopold Aschenbrenner’s Situational Awareness fund has returned to public markets after suffering major losses in July. The fund previously used concentrated, leveraged positions in AI stocks and was forced to liquidate much of its portfolio. Its latest trades again target the AI infrastructure and semiconductor sectors, including AMD, Intel, Bloom Energy, CoreWeave, SK Hynix, SanDisk and a DRAM ETF. The reported trades involved roughly $315 million in option premiums, representing about $1.1 billion of delta exposure. Unlike its earlier strategy, Situational Awareness is reportedly rebuilding its portfolio with significantly lower leverage and more fully paid positions, including FLEX call options. The fund is working with new broker Clear Street, while JPMorgan has reportedly ended its lending relationship with the firm. The change aims to reduce margin pressure and forced-liquidation risk, but the AI trade remains highly concentrated and volatile. Leopold’s return could draw renewed attention to AI stocks and options, although it does not remove the risk of sharp losses if the crowded AI infrastructure trade reverses.
Neutral
The direct market impact is neutral because the report concerns US equities and options rather than cryptocurrency markets. Leopold’s renewed activity may temporarily increase risk appetite for AI, semiconductor and data-centre infrastructure assets, sectors that often influence broader technology sentiment and, indirectly, crypto trading. However, the use of lower leverage and fully paid options reduces the immediate risk of forced selling compared with the July collapse. That limits the likelihood of a broad risk-off shock. Short term, traders may monitor AI-linked equities, implied volatility, semiconductor momentum and correlations between technology stocks and Bitcoin. A sharp reversal in these crowded positions could still weaken sentiment across high-beta assets, including cryptocurrencies. In the longer term, the episode reinforces a recurring market lesson: strong thematic conviction can produce large returns, but excessive concentration and leverage amplify liquidation risk. Similar deleveraging events in equities and crypto have often triggered volatility spillovers, although this case alone is unlikely to establish a sustained bullish or bearish trend for digital assets.
