Liquid Network: 600 BTC Gap Set for Cover Within Days

Liquid Network’s Bitcoin reserves remain about 600 BTC short after a September Elements software exploit, but JAN3 CEO Samson Mow says the gap will be covered within days. Blockstream has pledged to absorb the remaining loss rather than pass it to L-BTC holders. As of October 27, the federation wallet held about 3,649 BTC against 4,249 circulating L-BTC, or roughly 85.9% backing. Attackers created about 4,000 unbacked L-BTC; around 3,400 BTC was later returned. Direct Bitcoin redemptions remain paused until the reserve is fully restored to 1:1 and security measures—including software upgrades, reviews and stronger key management—are completed. Some withdrawals are available through third-party swap services. A top-up could ease redemption concerns, but the continued peg-out suspension limits L-BTC liquidity. Liquid says USDT and other tokenized assets on the sidechain were not affected.
Bearish
The immediate trading signal for L-BTC remains negative while direct peg-outs are suspended and reserves cover only about 85.9% of circulating tokens. That shortfall can weaken confidence in redemption and constrain liquidity, potentially keeping L-BTC under pressure or widening discounts on venues where it trades. Mow’s expectation that the gap will be covered within days, together with Blockstream’s commitment to bear the loss, may limit panic and support recovery if the top-up is confirmed. However, traders are likely to look for evidence that reserves have returned to 1:1 and that the security upgrades and key-management changes are complete before treating the peg as fully restored. In the longer term, restored backing and resumed withdrawals could improve confidence, while delays or further security concerns could prolong a discount and damage Liquid’s credibility. The overall classification is bearish because redemption restrictions and the backing deficit remain in place despite the planned remediation.
