MediaTek Adds Second AI ASIC Customer for 2028
MediaTek said it has begun co-design work with a second customer for its AI ASIC chips, with mass production expected in 2028. The company confirmed the buyer is not Chinese, countering speculation that ByteDance was behind the deal.
MediaTek began small-volume shipments of its first AI accelerator ASIC in September 2026. It raised its 2027 ASIC revenue target to about $16 billion, which it estimates could represent roughly 20% of the AI accelerator market. The company also forecast $2.5 billion in data-centre revenue for the fourth quarter of 2026.
The second-generation AI ASIC uses advanced multi-die packaging, with some designs already finalized for manufacturing. MediaTek expects improved performance per watt and lower ownership costs. The customer addition may reduce reliance on a single buyer, but the 2027 revenue figure remains a target, and the second customer’s chips are not expected to enter mass production until 2028.
Neutral
This announcement has no direct link to cryptocurrency prices, blockchain adoption or digital-asset regulation, so its immediate market impact is likely to be neutral. It may support broader sentiment around AI and semiconductor demand, but that does not necessarily translate into crypto buying or a change in market stability.
In the short term, traders may respond to MediaTek’s earnings, its $2.5 billion fourth-quarter data-centre revenue forecast and progress on the first AI ASIC. Any effect on crypto is more likely to come through general risk appetite or movements in technology shares than through a crypto-specific catalyst. As with other AI-chip customer and capacity announcements, expectations can move related equities, while delivery schedules and revenue targets still need confirmation.
Over the longer term, a second customer could diversify MediaTek’s revenue base and lend support to its $16 billion 2027 ASIC target. However, the new customer’s chips are not expected to enter mass production until 2028, and the target is not booked revenue. For crypto traders, the development is best treated as an indirect technology-sector signal rather than a basis for a directional position in digital assets.
