Metaplanet Sells 10,000 BTC, Adds 11,000 and Expands Strategy
Metaplanet sold 10,000 BTC for about $789 million in the third quarter of 2026, then bought 11,000 BTC for roughly $949 million. The Japanese-listed company recorded a net increase of 1,000 BTC, bringing its holdings to 44,000 BTC and making it the second-largest corporate Bitcoin holder after Strategy. Metaplanet said the sale demonstrated its ability to convert Bitcoin into cash, with proceeds exceeding the principal of its bonds, borrowings and other interest-bearing liabilities. The company also plans to allocate around 10% to 15% of its assets to strategic investments outside Bitcoin, including income-generating opportunities. The transactions point to continued Bitcoin exposure alongside more active liquidity and capital management, a development traders may weigh when assessing corporate demand for BTC.
Bullish
The immediate price impact on BTC is likely modestly positive: Metaplanet ended the quarter with 1,000 more BTC than it began with, adding to the signal of corporate demand. Large treasury purchases can support sentiment, particularly if traders interpret them as evidence that companies remain willing to hold Bitcoin through market volatility. The effect is not unambiguously positive, however. The 10,000 BTC sale showed that a large holder may also sell to meet liquidity or capital-management goals, and the later repurchase means the transactions do not represent a simple, sustained buying flow. In the short term, BTC price action will likely depend more on broader market liquidity and investor positioning than on this single company’s activity. Longer term, continued net accumulation could support demand, while Metaplanet’s planned allocation to non-Bitcoin investments and its focus on liquidity may limit how much of its capital goes to BTC. Overall, the net increase is a supportive signal, but not by itself a decisive catalyst for Bitcoin prices.
