NEAR Protocol 2.14.0 Upgrade Adds Post-Quantum Features
NEAR Protocol 2.14.0 is a major protocol and database upgrade, moving the network from protocol version 86 to 88. The release adds on-chain verification of FIPS 204 ML-DSA-65 post-quantum signatures, SHA-3 host functions and a stabilized universal-account scheme. It also removes gas rewards for contract calls and changes chunk-producer assignments to replace underperforming producers earlier within an epoch.
The upgrade includes transaction-validation changes, storage-proof limits and database migrations. Node operators must upgrade before voting for protocol version 87 begins on November 4; voting for version 88 is scheduled to begin on November 6. Successful upgrades are expected to activate 7–14 hours after the relevant voting epoch ends.
For traders, the NEAR upgrade is primarily a network infrastructure and developer update. It may affect node operations and contract compatibility, but the release itself does not announce a token supply change or a direct trading catalyst.
Neutral
The NEAR Protocol 2.14.0 release is a substantial technical upgrade, but its announced features do not directly change NEAR token supply, create new demand, or establish a clear short-term trading catalyst. The main implications are operational: node operators need to upgrade before protocol-version voting, and developers may need to account for new validation rules, host functions and storage limits. These changes could cause temporary friction if operators or applications are unprepared, although the release also improves network resilience and developer capabilities.
As with many blockchain hard forks and major client releases, markets may show brief volatility around upgrade deadlines, particularly if traders anticipate downtime or compatibility problems. However, an upgrade alone does not reliably produce sustained price gains; traders typically look for evidence such as successful activation, stable block production, application adoption, network usage and broader market direction. In the longer term, post-quantum signature support and improved producer reassignment may strengthen NEAR’s technical positioning, but any token-price effect depends on adoption and execution rather than the feature announcement itself. Overall, the likely market impact is neutral, with operational milestones and network performance worth monitoring.
