Network School Acquires Farcaster, Plans a New Direction
Network School, founded by Balaji Srinivasan, has acquired Farcaster from Neynar. The deal includes the Farcaster app, protocol codebase and related products; its value was not disclosed. Neynar co-founder Rish said the transfer followed an evaluation of several offers and would give Farcaster a different operating model. Rish and co-founder Manan are leaving, while the rest of Neynar’s staff will join Network School to continue developing Farcaster. Neynar acquired Farcaster from its original developer, Merkle Manufactory, in January. The future of Clanker, which was included in that earlier deal, remains unclear; Rish is reportedly considering separating it and seeking another buyer. Farcaster’s app says it will be renamed the “Network State Protocol” and focus on voluntary digital communities that could eventually extend into the physical world. Users will be asked to accept or reject a social smart contract, with those who accept receiving an on-chain access NFT. The ownership change and proposed product shift may affect Farcaster’s users and ecosystem, but no token or financial terms were announced.
Neutral
The acquisition is primarily an ownership and product-direction change for Farcaster, with no disclosed purchase price, token transaction, or direct impact on major crypto assets. The announcement could create short-term uncertainty among Farcaster users and developers, particularly because co-founders Rish and Manan are leaving and Clanker’s future is unresolved. Traders may watch for changes in user activity, developer support, protocol governance, and any later details about Clanker. Similar platform acquisitions and leadership transitions in crypto have often produced volatility in project-specific tokens when a token is directly tied to the platform, but this article does not identify a Farcaster token or announce a token-related event. In the longer term, the Network State Protocol concept could attract attention if it leads to sustained adoption, new on-chain activity, or a viable digital-community model. However, the proposal is still an announced direction rather than evidence of execution. Overall, the news is unlikely to materially affect broader market stability; its trading significance is currently concentrated in Farcaster’s ecosystem and depends on follow-through.
